Carrie Yung: Weaving Resilience and Transience Through Global Artistic Threads

Navigating through the evanescent boundaries of art and life, Carrie Yung's manifests as a network of expressive nodes, each echoing the nuances of her material choices across global landscapes. As a graduate of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Yung has intricately woven her academic rigor into the entrepreneurial tapestry of Pamycarie, her slow fashion and lifestyle brand. This intersection of commerce and creativity serves not merely as a platform but as a dialogue between the ephemeral and the eternal.

In her latest series, "Passing and Becoming," Yung employs resin not just as a medium but as a metaphor for transience, capturing the fragile permanence of human encounters in sculptures that resonate like whispers across continents—from Milan to Tokyo to Hong Kong. These pieces, spectral yet palpable, invite audiences into a realm where the boundaries of time and texture blur, revealing the profound interconnectivity of our experiences.

The 2024 Liu Shiming Scholarship has recognized Yung for her visionary approach to contemporary art, one that elegantly conceals as much as it reveals, engaging viewers in a silent conversation about visibility, heritage, and the individual’s place within the global fabric. Yung’s practice, deeply rooted in the physicality of her chosen materials, serves as both shield and beacon, reflecting her inner narrative while guarding the sanctity of her artistic intent.

Through her work, Yung explores the concept of “artistic hiding”—a strategic concealment akin to the thematic elements found in the speculative "Dark Forest Theory." Here, civilizations hide to avoid conflict; similarly, Yung masks the full breadth of her creativity behind the visible layers of her art, prompting a deeper engagement and interpretation from her audience. This methodological discretion positions her works not as mere artistic expressions but as nodes in a larger discourse, quietly pinging with messages about cultural identity and heritage.

Carrie Yung's continued exploration under the auspices of the Liu Shiming Scholarship promises a further unfurling of her narrative threads, inviting us to unravel the complex tapestry of her artistic and cultural inquiries. As she moves forward, each installation, sculpture, and design will not only mark a location on a map but a point of reflection—a moment of connection in the ever-expanding dialogue of contemporary art.
